For another year, the Hunter community displays its Halloween spirit through dance parties, pumpkin painting and festive costumes.
Reporter Klaudia Wiacek and photographer Cassidy LaPointe teamed up to capture photos of Hunter students who showed up to campus sporting costumes inspired by their favorite movies, childhood icons, characters and more.
Abby Cross (Angel) & Daniella Rodriguez (Holly Golightly)

What was the inspiration and process like behind your costume?
Cross: I just thought it was cute. I love it.
Rodriguez: I’ve always loved Audrey Hepburn and a lot of people say that I look like her. When it came to getting ready, I was looking at pictures of Audrey and I wanted to make sure I made it as screen-accurate as possible. This was probably one of my favorite costumes I’ve ever done.
Jay Montalvo (Hello Kitty)

What was the inspiration and process like behind your costume?
I didn’t want to be Hello Kitty at first, I actually wanted to be Ruby Gloom. But I couldn’t find the stockings and so it was an easier costume to be Hello Kitty. I was just scrolling through Pinterest.
Do you have any fun Halloween plans for the day?
Kind of. I’m gonna go pick up my friend from their college after my class, and we’re gonna go to my house to have a little movie marathon.
Alani Manbanol (Tinker Bell)

What was the inspiration and process like behind your costume?
I was Tinkerbell when I was in preschool and I was like, it’s my freshman year of college. I wanted to revamp it. I was actually really last minute with it, but my mom got everything on Amazon for me and everything came out the way I wanted.
Do you have any fun Halloween plans for the day?
Today I plan on going trick or treating with my friends.
Xavier Borrero (2D from Gorillaz)

What was the inspiration and process like behind your costume?
I am 2D from Gorillaz. One of my favorite bands ever. I just thought it would be fun to do the costume, especially since I’m kind of lanky just like the character.
Do you have any fun Halloween plans for the day?
I’m going to a party in the city.
Joyeeta Dey (Hugh Hefner)

What was the inspiration and process like behind your costume?
It was a group costume type of thing. Me and my friend planned it together. Hugh Hefner, he was obviously a horrible person to women. And I feel like it’s good to reclaim titles like that as women.
Ariana A. Rivera (Indiana Jones) & Valentina Soto (Pierrot Clown)

What was the inspiration and process like behind your costume?
Rivera: I’m Indiana Jones and I’m a classical archeology major. So it just felt fitting. I love it. I will be reusing this outfit again, so it’s very practical.
Soto: I decided to be a clown because I was like, I’ve never done that before. And you know it, it was the last minute.
Do you have any fun Halloween plans for the day behind your costume?
Rivera: We’re going out after this in the West Village and they’re setting up for the Halloween parade.
Valentina, how did you make that hat that you’re wearing?
Soto: So I bought a pack of party hats and then I used some papers from class to cover it and make it white. And then I glued ribbon on with an Elmer’s glue stick because my hot glue ran out.
Du Lam (IRS Grim Reaper)

What was the inspiration and process like?
My costume is the Grim Reaper, but as the IRS. My inspiration was basically Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad and the saying [from Benjamin Franklin] of “There’s two things in life that are certain except for death and taxes.” So I just said, screw it. Why not just dress up as a grim reaper who does tax collecting?
Do you have any fun Halloween plans for the day?
I plan to be creeping up on Hunter. I plan to scare everyone, by going around and saying, “Pay your taxes or else I’ll take your soul.”
Aphrodite Fruneecs (Satoru Gojo)

What was the inspiration and process like beind your costume?
The first anime that I truly watched was Jujutsu Kaisen. And I really liked GoJo a lot.
Kaitlyn Lopez (Nobara Kugisaki) & Briana Ramos (Ghostface)

What was the inspiration and process like behind your costume?
Lopez: I just love JJK and I like cosplaying. I’ve done it quite a bit for cons [conventions] and she’s another character I wanted to cosplay, so I decided to be her today.
Ramos: Oh my God. My obsession with Scream and Billy Loomis. He is so hot. As well as Stu. Yes, he can smash. Put this in the news.
Do you have any fun Halloween plans for the day?
Lopez: I’m planning to go to a fair at CCNY [The City College of New York]. I was also going to do a horror movie marathon today.
(Ramos also had the same plans.)
Alyssa Connelly (Bubonic Plague Doctor)

Due to her mask, Connelly was unable to be interviewed, but nodded when asked to be part of this article.
Nikole Rajgor (Velma) & Alp Ulker (Shaggy)

What was the inspiration and process like behind your costume?
Rajgor: This was what Spirit Halloween had left in my size. Alp and I didn’t plan this either. I was texting him and he mentioned he was Shaggy- and I was like “No way, I’m Velma! Get a picture with me!”
Ulker: It’s a simple outfit to put together. I still wanted to show Halloween spirit without having to come up with a costume idea. I’m also saving my slutty costume for the weekend.
Shabiq Kennedy (Bloodborne)

What was the inspiration and process like behind your costume?
I chose the Bloodborne costume because the game meant a lot to me growing up. I loved the message of resilience and exploration in a nightmare world.
