The Roosevelt House

Over a century ago, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt moved into a double townhouse located at 47-49 East 65th Street. It was their homebase as they changed the world… and it’s now the Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, offering minors in Public Policy and Human Rights. They also throw amazing free events. Here’s the schedule so far. 

Promoting Civil Discourse & Intellectual Dialogue

A new series for thoughtful engagement and bridge-building — three sessions this fall, all at Roosevelt House, all free, all open to the public. RSVP for each.

• 🗓️ Mon, Sept. 14 — Civic Participation in the Mamdani Era. 6–7:30 p.m. Hunter Urban Policy & Planning alums Sideya Sherman (Director of City Planning, chair of the City Planning Commission) and Ahmed Tigani (27th NYC Buildings Commissioner) on housing, civic engagement and how CUNY shaped their careers. Moderated by Prof. Laura Wolf-Powers.
• 🗓️ Tue, Sept. 30 — “Emergent City” screening. 5:30–8 p.m. The documentary on the Industry City redevelopment fight in Sunset Park, from Hunter Film & Media chair Kelly Anderson and Jay Arthur Sterrenberg. Panel with the filmmakers and field producer Betty Yu.
• 🗓️ Wed, Oct. 14 — “Sex Work: It’s Just a Job” screening. 6–8 p.m. Documentary centering sex workers and decriminalization advocates. Panel with filmmaker and Hunter Professor Emerita Tami Kashia Gold, sociologist Alex S. Vitale, and organizers Molly Simmons, Marla Cruz and Tahtianna Fermin. Moderated by Provost Manoj Pardasani.

• 🗓️ Wed, Sept. 9 — Sam Schwartz & Cary Pepper on their new novel “AutoKill”. 6 p.m., 47–49 E. 65th St. (also on Zoom). Former NYC Traffic Commissioner “Gridlock Sam” and co-author Cary Pepper on their debut thriller — a 2036 conspiracy sparked by a fatal autonomous-vehicle crash. In conversation with SSTRP Director Kelly McGuinness. RSVP required.
